The project is dedicated to the memory of a historical event and its distortions that occur due to time, ideology, subsequent events and everyday life. The artist explores the period of repression in the Soviet Union. The main thing for the author was to understand what happened to the memory of the Gulag now and why.
The artist found materials on Avito (a platform for the resale of second-hand things in Russia) that caught her attention - these were various items, mostly made by gulag prisoners or owned by camp guards. Then the author went to the hashtag “gulag” on Instagram and found a gulag quest, which is organized by young guys from Moscow, posting visitors to the quest and the process on social networks.
As a result, the artist places the found materials on top of her images, thus emphasizing the multi-layered opinions and historical events, which generates memory distortions.
